Breast Surgery
Breasts often have a focus in realms ranging from fashion to motherhood. However, they can also be the focus of problems such as back pain, discouragement, or self-image issues.
If you are unhappy with the size, shape, or appearance of your breasts, or they are causing you discomfort, you may want to consider breast surgery. Dr. Lisa J. Learn understands what women just like you are going through, and can provide care that not only restores or reforms your breasts, but helps restore comfort and confidence.
Breast surgery can be generally split into three categories.
Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation refers to enhancing the shape, appearance, and/or size of the breasts. Women may choose to have such a procedure for many different reasons, including:
- To even out breasts that are different sizes.
- To provide more naturally appearing proportions between the top and bottom of the body.
- To remove sagging as a result of weight loss.
- To restore previous size and shape following lactation.
Breast augmentation is often performed with implants of various sizes or shapes, depending on the needs of the patient.
Breast Reduction
Breast reduction surgery is often performed on patients whose breast size and weight has been problematic. Their breasts might be contributing to chronic back or neck pain, or they might feel self-conscious or otherwise distressed about their figure.
A procedure for reducing the breasts involves the removal of fat, skin, and tissue, as well as the potential relocation of the nipples and areolas. While there are sometimes risks involving lumps from scar tissue and trouble with breastfeeding, the vast majority of women who undergo breast reduction report tremendous improvement in their symptoms.
Breast Reconstruction
Reconstructive breast surgery can help restore breasts to their natural appearance. This type of procedure is often performed following a mastectomy, if someone has been born with breast abnormalities, or if one’s breasts have been deformed as the result of an injury or accident.
Breast reconstruction typically takes one of two forms:
- Using implants to recreate the shape and size of the breast.
- Using donor fat and tissue from other parts of the body, such as the abdomen or back.
