What is Botox, and Is It Safe?
Botox is an injectable prescription medication that is fully approved by the FDA since 2002 and has been used successfully for decades to eliminate lines, wrinkles, and creases. It’s a great way to make yourself look younger and healthier, and it’s very safe when administered by a trained professional.
It’s also one of the most lethal toxins known to mankind. Wait, what? We’ll back up a bit and explain.
Botox, short for botulinum toxin, is a protein produced by certain types of bacteria. Injecting Botox into the body temporarily prevents a chemical neurotransmitter called acetylcholine, or ACh, from being released in that area. Your body uses ACh to activate muscle fibers, so if they get blocked, the muscles relax.
This muscle relaxation and weakening is what makes the wrinkles disappear. Lines and creases build up on faces over time after tens of thousands of laughs, frowns, smiles, eyebrow raises, and other tiny facial motions. As the muscles continue to contract, the wrinkles deepen. However, because Botox prevents the relevant muscle fibers from receiving ACh, they stop getting the memo to tense up and contract. In time, the wrinkles subside or disappear entirely. Not too much time, either—most people see results within just two to three days of procedure.
Now, about that “lethal toxin” bit.
What you have to keep in mind is that every substance, from the caffeine in your morning coffee to sugar, vitamins, or even plain water, can be harmful and dangerous if used inappropriately or in excess. Yet when used in moderation, these same substances can be beneficial or even essential.
Botox has an extremely safe track record. When administered by a trained, licensed, and board-certified professional like Dr. Lisa Learn, the rate of even minor side effects (like bruising or drooping eyelids) is as low as 1 in 3,000, according to some studies. Serious complications are even more rare. When applied skillfully, Botox is even safer than many medications you can buy off the shelf at the pharmacy.
Keep that phrase in mind, though — “when applied skillfully.” You’re always going to get the best results with the fewest worries if you get your Botox from a highly-trained medical professional. Dr. Lisa Learn provides safe and effective injections for her patients throughout Fort Lauderdale and beyond, and she can help you eliminate your wrinkles, too!
