Woman with dark pink lipstick on

Looking for plumper, rounder, fuller lips? A lip augmentation, otherwise known as lip fillers, may be the perfect solution!

There are lots of reasons why lip fillers are a top choice for those looking to add a little volume and sensuality to their smile. It’s a relatively simple procedure, with very manageable aftercare for most and few serious side effects, and the results can last for more than a year.

But, of course, you’ll want more details before you make a decision for yourself. No problem! Below, you can learn more about what you can expect after getting lip fillers. If you still have questions, or you’re ready to schedule your appointment, give us a call!

The Procedure

Lip fillers are injections that give your lips a little extra volume in targeted locations, providing a plumper, healthier, shapelier look.

We specialize in Restylane, a dermal filler made primarily from hyaluronic acid. This is a gel-like sugar that’s naturally found in the skin, which makes it highly safe and compatible with the lips. It’s also longer lasting than fillers made from collagen.

The procedure only takes about 30 minutes and is minimally invasive. The lips will be numbed first, typically using a topical anesthetic—although a nerve block injection (similar to what’s used for dental work) may be used instead, depending on your comfort level.

Immediately Following the Procedure

Although side effects are usually relatively minor, it’s normal to experience some swelling and even light bruising at the injection sites.

Immediately following your procedure, it’s good to use an ice pack (or ice-covered in cloth) on your lips to limit pain, swelling, and itching. You don’t want to apply pressure when you do this; just hold the ice lightly against the lips. We may also give you a topical gel to apply.

The First 1-2 Days After Injection

Swelling and bruising are often the most noticeable a day or two after the injections, before beginning to recede. You may still need to use an ice pack periodically if you are uncomfortable.

Do not start to second guess yourself! Lips can appear a little lumpy in these early stages, but you need to give them a few days to settle.

For the most part, you should be able to return to most normal activities as your comfort level dictates. However, there are a few things to keep in mind to aid the healing process over the first 48 hours:

  • Avoid putting firm pressure on your lips.
  • Avoid alcohol, extremely hot or cold drinks, or drinking through a straw.
  • Avoid blood-thinning medications, including ibuprofen. Acetaminophen/Tylenol is usually fine, but we’ll speak with you directly about which medications may be appropriate for your situation.
  • Drink lots of water.
  • Don’t wear any makeup or lip products.
  • Don’t smoke.
  • Put an extra pillow on your bed to keep your head elevated while you sleep.

The Weeks Following the Procedure

The exact recovery timetable is a little different for each individual, but usually, by day 5 most of the swelling will be gone and you’ll be able to see what the finished results will look like. There may be some further minor settling for up to 2 weeks after the injections.

You should also avoid going on an airplane for the first week after your injection, especially flights longer than 3 hours. The change in cabin pressure can exacerbate swelling and bruising.

We’ll schedule a follow-up visit with you to check and see how your lips are looking—and how you’re feeling! Since everybody’s lips respond slightly differently to the filler, it’s not unusual for us to do a couple of minor touch-ups after the initial appointment—especially if this is your first time with fillers.

Severe side effects from Restylane are exceedingly rare but do call us immediately if you develop severe or prolonged swelling or bruising, ulceration, allergic reactions, or visible “lumpiness” in the lips that doesn’t settle within a week.

How Long Will My Results Last?

Again, everyone responds a little differently to the fillers. Eventually, without any further treatment, your body will naturally break down and absorb the hyaluronic acid, returning your lips to their original size and shape.

Most people can expect to maintain their results for a minimum of 6 months, although for some people they can last as long as 12-18 months.

If you absolutely love your new lips and want them to stay the way they are, we are happy to discuss a “maintenance” schedule where you come back regularly for touch-ups. Usually, these take place once every 6 months, although it can vary from person to person.

Alternative Procedures?

There’s a reason lip fillers are by far the most popular option for lip augmentation. Due to the combination of safety, convenience, minimal aftercare, and relatively long-lasting results (or indefinitely lasting with maintenance appointments), they are the best option for most people looking to enhance lip volume.

That said, there are some potential alternatives that may be considered, including fat transfer from other areas of the body (often combined with liposuction for efficiency reasons), as well as lip implants.

Both of these procedures offer potentially longer-lasting results after the initial appointment but are accompanied by relatively higher risks of side effects and unsatisfactory results, as well as a longer recovery time.

Again, most people are probably going to prefer dermal fillers, but we are happy to discuss the pros and cons of all available options with you to help you make the best possible choice for your lifestyle.
