A great way to stay young and healthy is to be physically active, and around here there are plenty of opportunities to do just that! From surfing to skateboarding, to jogging on the beach, riding your bike, or taking a hike, our sunny skies and cool ocean breezes allow us to take full advantage of all kinds of outdoor activities. While being active outside keeps our bodies young, it can make our skin look—well, not so much. What’s worse is that all our fun in the sun is actually increasing our risk of skin cancer.

So how can we enjoy everything the Sunshine State has to offer without letting that sunshine damage our skin? These top tips for sun protection ought to help:

Be sure to wear sunscreen! Slather it on every day no matter where you are or what the weather is—you don’t have to be at the beach or pool for the sun’s rays to find you! Look for SPF of 30 or higher, and make sure the term “broad-spectrum” is on the label, which means it will protect you from both UVA and UVB rays.

You should also reapply every 2 hours, as well as after swimming or sweating, even if your lotion is water resistant. One other thing to keep in mind: always check the expiration date as sunscreens can become less effective over time.

Seek out shade between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm when the sun’s rays are most powerful. If you do head out midday, wear a wide-brimmed hat, long sleeves, and sunglasses, with UV protection of course!

You should choose make-up and moisturizers with built-in SPF for added protection, and check your skin regularly, too, so you can notice if any changes do occur. The key to successfully treating skin cancer is to catch it early.
