On Saturday, Oct. 17 at 7:30 am, there will be a pink invasion at Bayfront Park in Miami! In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, participants will toe the starting line of the Race for the Cure, and spectators wearing pink in support will line the course. Whether you’ve undergone breast augmentation surgery after a mastectomy, or you have made a personal choice, support is an essential part of healing post-procedure and beyond, both in the form of loved ones—and bras! So here are some tips for bra shopping after breast implants to get your new breasts the support they need!

  • When can you trade in your sports compression or medical grade bra and shop for something a little more attractive? It is recommended to wait 4-8 weeks. Make sure to get the “go ahead” first, though!
  • Avoid underwire options initially as these can cause irritation.
  • Fit is just as important as support! Your bra should remain level—all the way around!—and you should not have to continuously adjust your straps. Cups should fit against your skin and not bag. Before going through the trying on process, be sure to determine your new measurements. Your band size is measured around your ribcage just beneath your breasts. If this number is even, add four; if it is odd add five. Your cup size is determined by measuring around the fullest part of your breasts, then subtracting your band size from that number. If you get 1 to 2 ½ inches, look for a B cup; 2 ½ to 3 is a C; 3 ½ to 4 a D, and so on. Keep in mind, though, that your measurements are a good guide to go by, but different brands and styles may fit differently and require different sizes, so hitting the fitting room is a must!
  • Finally, start by buying just a couple of bras to make sure they offer the comfort, fit, and support you need after wearing them for a while.
