What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that helps improve the size, shape, and appearance of your breasts. Breast implants, a silicone gel or saline-filled device placed behind each breast to give it fullness and plumpness, are used to correct breasts that are too small or unevenly sized. Both types of implants have their advantages; however, many patients choose silicone gel-filled breast implants because they tend to feel more natural and appear more like real breasts.

Why Breast Augmentation Could Be Right For You

Breast augmentation is a safe, effective breast enhancement procedure that can give you fuller breasts and an improved body image. If you are unhappy with your breasts or want more volume in your cleavage, breast augmentation could be the answer. The procedure can be a good option for women who want to improve their breast size and shape. This may include:

  • Women who are unhappy with the current contour of their breasts.
  • Women who have lost weight and now have sagging breasts.
  • Women who have lost breast tissue after pregnancy.
  • Women with large breasts but small nipples.
  • Women with one breast that is smaller than the other.
  • Women looking to improve their appearance after breast cancer surgery.
  • Women with a breast deformity, such as Poland Syndrome or pectus excavatum.
  • Women who want a fuller chest for their own personal confidence boost.
  • Transgender individuals seeking MTF transgender top surgery.

Whatever your reason for contemplating breast augmentation, Dr. Learn will carefully evaluate your needs, discuss your goals, and perform a breast augmentation consultation to ensure you are a good candidate for the procedure.

Our Breast Augmentation Techniques

Breast Augmentation with Implants

This technique involves the use of silicone or saline implants to enhance breast size, shape, and fullness. Patients can choose from various implant types, sizes, and profiles to achieve their desired results. Dr. Learn makes discreet incisions, typically in the breast crease or around the areola. The chosen implant (silicone or saline) is carefully inserted into a pocket either beneath the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle to achieve the desired volume and shape.

Breast Lift with Augmentation

Combining breast augmentation with a lift requires specific incisions that vary depending on the extent of sagging. Excess skin is removed, and the breast tissue is reshaped to a more youthful position. Implants are then inserted to enhance volume and firmness.

Fat Transfer to Breast

For those seeking a natural enhancement without implants, fat transfer involves liposuction to harvest excess fat from other areas of the body, like the abdomen or thighs. The harvested fat is purified and meticulously injected into the breasts through small, inconspicuous incisions, allowing for precise contouring and enhancement.

Nipple Augmentation

Nipple augmentation procedures are designed to enhance nipple size, projection, and symmetry. This technique can be performed as a standalone procedure or in conjunction with other breast surgeries to achieve balanced aesthetics. This augmentation process may include nipple size reduction, projection enhancement, or correction of asymmetry. Incisions are discreetly made around the areola or along natural creases to achieve the desired nipple aesthetics.

Transgender Breast Augmentation / MTF Top Surgery

MTF top surgery can have a profound impact on an individual's self-esteem and gender dysphoria, as it aligns their physical appearance with their gender identity. It is an essential component of gender-affirming care for transgender women and those on the MTF spectrum. Dr. Learn specializes in transgender breast augmentation, offering tailored solutions to help transgender women achieve a more feminine chest appearance. Transgender breast augmentation typically involves incisions similar to traditional breast augmentation. Implants are placed beneath the chest muscle or breast tissue to create a more feminine chest contour. In some cases, additional chest contouring techniques may be used for optimal results.

Dr. Learn's practice is committed to delivering personalized, natural-looking results that prioritize patient comfort and confidence. Whether seeking augmentation, lift, fat transfer, or gender-affirming care, patients can trust Dr. Learn's expertise and compassionate approach.

How Breast Augmentation Works

Breast augmentation is a popular procedure, as most women want to enhance their natural beauty. Breast implants can lift, round, or enlarge drooping breasts and restore physical balance by giving each breast a similar shape and feel.

The implants can be placed under the chest muscle (submuscular), over the chest muscle (subglandular), or behind the breast tissue itself (transaxillary). The type of implant used will depend on several factors, including your body type and desired look.

Breast Implant Options

There has never been a better time for women who want to enhance their breasts. Today, more options are available than ever before! Whether you are looking for a more dramatic enhancement or something subtle, there is an option that meets your needs. Breast implants are available in various shapes and sizes. The size and shape you choose will depend on your body type, aesthetic goals, and the surgeon’s recommendation. Here are some of the options you can expect to discuss during your initial consultation with Dr. Learn:

Size

Breast implants come in a variety of sizes, ranging from about 150cc to 800cc or more. Many women need to have different-sized breast implants in each breast, as this helps create better symmetry.

The size of your implants will be determined by many factors: the size of your current breasts, what type of look you hope to achieve, and the advice from your surgeon.

Type

The most common types of breast implants are silicone gel-filled and saline-filled. Neither implant is necessarily preferable to the other and both are FDA-approved, but it is important to consider their various costs and differences in incision requirements.

  • Silicone gel-filled breast implants: Consisting of a silicone shell filled with a liquid silicone filler called cohesive gel, this type of implant is soft, smooth, and round in shape.
  • Saline-filled breast implants: These implants are made from medical-grade plastic that contains a sterile saltwater solution instead of cohesive gel.

Your cosmetic surgeon will help you determine which type of implant is best for your body and lifestyle.

Shape

Implants come in both round and shaped options. Round implants typically give the upper portion of your breasts a fuller look, while shaped implants tend to lend a gentler slope. Both can be made to look very natural with the help of a skilled cosmetic surgeon.

Projection

The distance a breast implant protrudes from the chest wall is its projection. Implants can range from moderate to high projection, depending on your needs. If you want a more natural look, it may be best to go with moderate or low-projection implants.

Profile

The profile of an implant refers to its overall curvature—the shape that results from a combination of its base diameter, projection, and volume. Smaller-framed patients tend to have less available breast tissue and may need implants with a higher profile in order to fill out their desired size without causing pain or discomfort.

What To Expect When Getting Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation (like many surgeries) is a multi-step process unique to your body type and needs. Here are some general guidelines for what you might expect during the course of your breast augmentation procedure:

Leading Up to the Procedure

The first step is to meet with our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Lisa J. Learn, who will perform a breast examination to determine if breast enhancement is appropriate for you. Our team will then also discuss your goals and expectations, as well as what types of implants are available and their associated risks.

If you decide to move forward, Dr. Learn will schedule a preoperative appointment for you approximately two weeks before your procedure, where we will discuss the procedure with you in greater detail.

The Procedure

Dr. Learn and her surgical team will make a single incision in either the crease under your breast, the armpit region, or around your nipple. Once the incision has been made, the team will separate the breast tissue from muscles and connective tissues.

The implant is positioned within a pocket directly in front or behind the outermost muscle of your chest wall (pectoralis major). Saline implants are injected with sterile salt water once they are in place. Silicone implants contain silicone gel from the moment of insertion. When the implant is appropriately placed, the team will close the incision with stitches and bandage it.

Post-Procedure Care

You will see Dr. Learn two days after your surgery for a check-up to ensure everything is going well and that you are healing properly. We will change your bandages and check the drainage. We will also provide any additional information you might need about the recovery process. Sutures are typically removed 1-2 weeks after the procedure.

No Scar Worries!

Concerned about noticeable scarring? We can reassure you that all incisions are made in discreet places—under your breast, armpit, or around the nipple(s)—so there will be no visible scars.

Factors like implant size and type will determine the location of the incision. We will discuss these issues prior to surgery so that you know what to expect.

That said, you must take care of the healing areas after your surgery. The recovery process requires you to take special care of the area. This includes applying medication and keeping the wound clean with gauze or bandages (the same post-op instructions for most surgeries). Additionally, you will need to rest for the first few weeks and gradually increase your activity level.

You may also need to wear a support bra at all times during this period of recovery. It is important to remember that swelling and soreness may occur during recovery, but pain medication will help reduce discomfort.

Following Dr. Learn’s post-op instructions is essential to ensure a good outcome from the surgery.

How can I Tell if a Particular Size is Right for Me?

We help patients choose their desired implant size by having them try on implants in the office. Implants are measured in cubic centimeters (ccs), not cup sizes. Most women choose an implant size that is between 200 and 450 ccs. The cup size of the final breasts depends on how large they were before augmentation and what brand of bra you prefer.

What is the Typical Recovery Time Following Surgery?

The recovery time for a breast augmentation can vary widely. Although it is considered a major surgery requiring general anesthesia, most people can return to work and other non-strenuous activities within two weeks of having breast augmentation. Movements such as stretching and lifting may be limited for several months while you wear a supportive bra to help with re-strengthening your shoulder muscles. We will discuss this in greater detail with you at your initial consultation.

What is the Difference Between Round and Teardrop-Shaped Implants?

Most women seeking breast augmentation are small-breasted and want upper pole fullness, so they usually choose round implants. Teardrop-shaped implants require a larger incision for insertion and tend to shift more than round ones.
