What is Xeomin?
Xeomin is one of the brand names of the botulinum toxin type A – a protein that has been extracted and purified from the bacterium clostridium botulinum. Xeomin can only be administered under prescription and is injected into facial muscles to provide a temporary improvement in the appearance of frown lines (the wrinkles that often appear between the eyebrows as we age).
The manufacturing process through which Xeomin is produced is unique, in that it eliminates all the unnecessary proteins that are not needed in the treatment while at the same time isolating the therapeutic molecule.
What is Xeomin Used for?
As we age, we all experience the so-called fine lines. These are caused by common, everyday facial expressions such as squinting and frowning. Over time, these movements make the muscles under our skin contract.
This repeated contraction, combined with the natural loss of elasticity that the skin experiences as we get older, will eventually give rise to frown lines. The protein contained in Xeomin helps by preventing the muscle fibers of our face from contracting. As the contractions reduce, the frown lines are minimized or eliminated, albeit only for a period of time.
What Kind of Results Can I Expect?
If you are a good candidate for Xeomin treatment, you can expect to see very fast results – as fast as only three to four days after your first Xeomin injection. Studies showed that, on average, people start noticing the first improvements after less than a week, whereas very few people had to way around 30 days before they could see a radical change.
The effects of Xeomin on your frown lines generally last around three months, but this can vary significantly depending on each individual patient.
What is a Xeomin Treatment Like?
Xeomin treatments are normally very short, taking on average around ten to 20 minutes. During your treatment, Dr. Lisa Learn will inject a small dose of Xeomin into your forehead muscles – these are the muscles that are responsible for causing frown lines.
The treatment is not painful, and anesthesia is not required. Nonetheless, you might experience some minor discomfort, for which Dr. Learn may use either a cold pack or a topical anesthetic.
Why Choose Xeomin?
Several randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials were carried out on hundreds of healthy adults, proving that Xeomin was very effective. In two of these studies, the average age of participants was 46 years. Some patients were administered 20 units of Xeomin, while others were given a similar dose of a placebo drug.
The patients who received the Xeomin treatment were reported to have a much higher success rate than those who received the placebo – in both cases, the results were analyzed after 30 days. The studies also confirmed the safety of Xeomin, which prompted the FDA to approve it for use in the treatment of frown lines in 2011.
Before choosing Xeomin to improve the appearance of your frown lines, however, you will need to discuss both the benefits and the potential downsides of the treatment with our doctor. For example, if you are allergic to botulinum toxin (or to any other ingredients contained in Xeomin), you will not be able to get a Xeomin treatment.
Similarly, if you have a skin infection at the site where your Xeomin injection should take place, you will need to wait for the infection to clear before you can start your treatment.
