What are the signs of melanoma?

Although most often found on areas of your body exposed to the sun, melanoma can occur anywhere, so it is important to check your skin regularly for any signs of change. Quick action at the onset is your best chance at beating it, so keep an eye out for these signs of melanoma—the easiest way to remember them is to remember your ABCDEs!

A – Asymmetrical shape. Moles with irregular shapes, like two halves looking different from each other.

B – Border irregularity. If the edges of your moles are ragged, scalloped, or notched-looking.

C – Color changes. Differentiations in color or changes in pigmentation

D – Diameter. A mole that is bigger than ¼ inch, or the size of a pencil eraser.

E – Evolving. Any change in shape, size, surface, color, or symptoms such as bleeding or itchiness.

If you notice any of these signs, make an appointment with your doctor right away.
