Silicone Breast Implants
Believe it or not, breast implants have been around for over 40 years—and they’ve come a long way, baby! They are now available in all different shapes, sizes, and even textures. Silicone gel types especially are known for their realistic appearance and feel, which is why they’ve become a popular choice among women everywhere.
The REAL Story
Silicone gel implants don’t just have the approval of women in general, however—they’re approved by the FDA too!
You may have heard about how they were removed from the market by the FDA way back in 1992, but after careful study and research, certain varieties were re-approved and made available again in 2006 for breast augmentations as well as reconstructive surgery. Today they are often the implant of choice because they tend to look and feel softer and more natural than their saline alternatives—in other words, more like real breasts.
“Gummy bear” implants are a secondary type of FDA-approved silicone gel implants. Dubbed as “gummy bears” because of their “solid-liquid” consistency, they have an ability to maintain their shape for a greater amount of time and last longer than traditional silicone. They also promise to be leak-free and have fewer complications such as capsular contracture, which is a buildup of scar tissue.
You’ll Have to Look REAL Close
Besides their natural look and feel, any signs of your operation will be tough to find! Incisions are made inconspicuously around the areola, under the natural curve of your breasts, or even under your armpit hidden from sight, depending on how much enlargement is being done. The implant is then placed in a pocket and positioned over or under your chest muscles. You’ll need to take it easy for several days to several weeks following the procedure, not lifting or doing anything strenuous. Regular check-ups are recommended to make sure the breast implants are functioning properly and do not have any leaks, since typically with silicone gel implants, there are no noticeable signs of trouble. Keep in mind that all implants need replacing eventually—it’s important to monitor them regularly to ensure when it is necessary to do so to avoid any complications.
