Labiaplasty

Having enlarged labia can be uncomfortable and embarrassing. Usually the result of childbirth or the aging process, tissues become stretched out and loosened, leading to an increase in size or irregularities in shape. Cosmetic surgery can correct this problem with a procedure called labiaplasty.

The Low Down on Labia

A woman’s vulva is made up of four labia, (or “lips” surrounding the vagina)—two outer, called the labia majora, and two inner, which are smaller and referred to as labia minora.  Labiaplasty, or labial rejuvenation as it is sometimes called, is most often performed to tighten or change the size, shape, or asymmetry of the larger, outer labia; however, it is possible to surgically correct the inner labia as well.

Easing Embarrassment & Discomfort

Although this is considered a cosmetic procedure, since it is essentially making aesthetic changes, many women are opting for labiaplasty for reasons more than just a dislike of their appearance or a feeling of low self-esteem. Some find their situation uncomfortable to the point that it hinders regular activity, so that doing things like riding a bike, or even wearing tight pants, causes problems. Many women even find that they experience pain or discomfort during intercourse due to the size of their labia. As a female plastic surgeon, Dr. Lisa J. Learn understands all of these feelings and is dedicated to restoring not only your confidence, but your comfort as well. Please do not be embarrassed. We know that this is a very private problem and may be difficult for you to discuss openly. Rest assured that you will be given the discretion, care, and understanding that you deserve.

What to Expect

This cosmetic surgery is performed under general anesthesia. The procedure reduces the size of your labia and improves symmetry by removing excess tissue, and reshaping the skin. It can also repair damage, and change the overall appearance of the vulva. There are several techniques used—including laser technology—all with absorbable sutures so you do not have to worry about getting stitches out. You will need to schedule follow up visits, however, to ensure you are healing well. Pain medication will be prescribed or recommended. You can expect some bruising and swelling during this time, and possibly some discharge for three to four weeks. You will need at least a month to recover and should refrain from sexual activity for six weeks, until you are fully healed. It is also important to note that labiaplasty should be delayed until after you are done having children.
